My grandfather died of a heart attack
Recently I had a huge a wake-up call. My grandfather died of a heart attack (I really miss him), my uncle died of a heart attack when I was on school camp (he was on a school camp too, but in another state), my other uncle had a heart attack recently (a 98% blockage – it was a miracle he survived), my other uncle has had two heart attacks and my mother’s grandfather died of heart issues when mum was 7 years old. I hear he was a good bloke who did his bit during WWII, it would have been nice to meet him…
And then my wake-up call came when my dad…
But even closer to home and what really woke me up was my dad having a heart attack last month while in hospital – he very nearly died. The doctors told him there was nothing they could do for him and that he should call his family as he was about to die. My mother has diabetes and him not being there to look after her would have been… I’m not really sure what to say about that, it’s too crazy to comprehend.
“I’m ‘busy’ and couldn’t really be bothered putting in the effort” (did I have a bad attitude?)
This big wake-up call, my dad almost dying, was what helped get me out training hard this morning even though I was ‘busy’ and didn’t want to bother. I’m a muscular guy but that doesn’t’ mean I’m fit and healthy. So, I have decided I am going to get properly fit, but not just fit, I need to get properly fit and properly healthy – and SO DO YOU.
If I follow the pattern of my family my boys could be without a dad soon…
And I really don’t want that to happen to them. I am going to set an example for my 3 and 6-year-old boys so that they don’t see their father die early, and then possibly follow my example.

Let’s face it, as a nation, we are getting fatter and unhealthier faster than ever before.
That means that some of the people reading this are going to die much earlier than they would if they were healthy and in shape. And because they are either unfit or overweight, they are going to be living lives that are far, far more uncomfortable, miserable and sucky than they need to be.

OBESITY and DIABETES are growing at a faster rate than ever in Australia, and at an even higher rate in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs (don’t believe me, have a look at the well-researched article I wrote for Inspiro Community Health). Working in the health industry for over 10 years and seeing all the terrible problems that being overweight, obese or riddled with a multitude of disease causes I can tell you that it does not end well. Ever. This is literally a ‘dead’ serious issue and pretending it doesn’t exist or saying she’ll be right mate will not change reality. And being skinny fat can be equally unhealthy.
Consider this message a no bull shit wakeup call
Consider this message a no bull shit wake up call to stop sitting on social media, stop complaining, stop making excuses about why you are overweight, or unhealthy, or why you can’t exercise, or why you are lazy, or why you just can’t quite lose that extra bit of weight or why your weight constantly yo yo’s, or a bunch of other probably very legitimate things.
Let’s all stop doing those things and make the decision to be healthy.
